These scrunchies work up very quickly and only use one stitch. This cute crocheted scrunchie would make a great gift. It is perfect for everyday wear and is washable and dryable. I’ve washed my scrunchies a few times now and they still look brand new.
This pattern is a good scrap buster for your bulky weighted yarns. I love that you can use basically any bulky weighted yarn and still get a cute scrunchie by the end.

I used Goody Ouchless 2MM Elastics Hair Ties for this project, but you can use any elastic that is about 6 inches in length. The way that this project works up makes it so you can’t see the elastic even when the scrunchie is worn. So don’t worry if your elastic doesn’t match the color of your yarn.
CROCHET CHUNKY SCRUNCHIE
Stitches
This scrunchie is made with half double crochet stitches repeated. To half double crochet; YO, insert your hook through the elastic (treating it as the “next stitch”), YO and pull up that loop, YO and pull through all three loops on the hook.
Notes
The stitches are worked as if the elastic is the next stitch in a magic ring. The stitches will be worked around the elastic.

This pattern can be made using most any #6 Bulky weighted yarn. The following are my favorite yarn and hook patterns for this project.
One skein of Bernat Baby Blanket yarn.
Or one skein of Bernat Baby Blanket Ombre yarn.
Or one skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn.
Size P (16) 11.5mm hook. I like to use Susan Bates hooks.
Chunky Scrunchie
Put your hook through the elastic, yarn over and draw up a loop. Chain 3.
Row 1: HDC 40. (40)
Thread yarn on an embroidery needle. Insert through the first HDC and pull tight. Insert needle through the back loop only of the last HDC. Weave in ends next to each other and make a square knot with the two loose ends. Snip off loose threads and hide the knot.
